Choosing the Best Waders for Duck Hunting

As an avid waterfowl hunter there are few things that are as important as a good set of waders. We use them to get to some of the roughest parts of the water, in some of the coldest water and in some of the most extreme conditions. All while expecting them to keep us comfortable and dry. We ask a lot from our waders but when spending your hard-earned money, you should ask a lot. Whether it’s your first time picking up a set of waders or your fifth, there are a few things to keep in mind which I will cover in this review.

When starting out to find the best waders for the money, I looked at 4 main things: durability, comfort, waterproof, and the warranty. I then broke them down into 3 different ranges based on price: top tier, mid-range, and budget friendly. I looked at several different types of waders in each category.

Sitka Delta Hunting Zip Wader

When it comes to hunting, Sitka is a staple in the industry, known for the quality of hunting gear they produce. Their waders are no exception. The best way I can describe these waders is “comfortable in any season, and they hold up to anything that is thrown at them”. I credit this to the Gore-Tex material they are made from. Most waders are designed for cold or warm weather conditions, but not both. They are comfortable in a wide range of temperatures if you wear some base layers correctly in colder conditions, as these are not insulated waders. These had the best boots of all the waders I reviewed, as they are not only comfortable but warm and have plenty of tread for grip. As far as waterproofing goes, they’ve seen plenty of days in the water over the last year in all kinds of terrain and I have yet to get wet. Lastly, as far as a warranty goes, these are fully serviceable by Sitka, should you have a problem. I have heard it can take some time to get the repairs done and sent back so keep that in mind.

These waders are offered in several sizes, from small to 3XXL, so they generally have something for everyone. As far as cost, they have an MSRP of $999.99, but I have found them on sale for as low as $799 on the internet. Although they are costly, I am often reminded that you get what you pay for, and if you’re a diehard waterfowl guy, I think it is money well spent.

TideWe Deep Wade Zip Waders

If you haven’t heard of TideWe yet they are starting to make a name for themselves in the hunting industry. They offer various waders from basic to top of the line, like the TideWE Deep Wade Zip Waders. They even make heated waders for those incredibly cold days. The Deep Wade Zip Waders are best described as warm and comfortable. These 4-layer nylon waders are made with 600-1600 gram 3M Thinsulate material that’s not only warm but is also breathable. The boots were durable and had plenty of tread, making walking over uneven terrain a breeze. With these being a newer wader to the market I haven’t gotten to test them as extensively as some of the other waders but don’t let this shy you away. I have tested plenty of other TideWe gear extensively, even other waders as you will see later, and haven’t had any issues. Regarding waterproofing, I was as dry as possible in the time I spent in them. They offer a 1-year warranty from the date of purchase, which is pretty standard with most companies.

These waders are also offered in several sizes. They are based on standard boot size and range from 7 to 14. A quick look at their size guide makes it easy to figure out what size you need. When it comes to cost, the cheapest you can find these is on Amazon, with prices varying from $199 to $249. These will make great cold-weather waders, especially if you are looking for a pair with built-in insulation.

TideWe hunting waders are the cheapest waders on the list by price but don’t let that scare you they are packed full of features.

LaCrosse Wetlands II

Regarding boots, everyone knows the name LaCrosse, but did you know they made waders as well? These aren’t just any waders either. I tested these waders this last winter in sub-zero temperatures chasing honkers all over Ohio. The LaCrosse Wetlands II waders were some of the warmest and most comfortable waders I have ever worn. These 1600-gram Thinsulate waders come in two great camo patterns, Mossy Oak Bottomland and Realtree Max 7. I tested the waterproof material, wading out into ponds to retrieve geese and navigate down creeks and shallow rivers looking for ducks. I stayed bone dry and warm the entire time. They have a breathable nylon upper with a built-in hand warmer pocket. The upper is lined with 60 grams of quilted insulation, which is ideal for layering to keep warm. Regarding the boots, the active fit was one of my favorite features, which is technology that makes it easy to put them on or take them off. The boots are built to withstand any terrain thrown at them with the swamp-lite outsole that’s built to keep traction in the snow and or mud. Of all the waders I have tested regarding warmth, these definitely take first place.

Best Duck Hunting Wader Under $100:

TideWe Chest Waders

The TideWe Hunting Waders are one of the best bangs for your buck if you want something budget-friendly. These waders pack many features that some higher-end waders do at a much smaller sticker price. They are made out a 3.5 mm neoprene material with a comfortable rubber boot. They are offered in both 600 and 800 gram 3M Thinsulate material. Not only do they keep you warm, but they keep you dry as well. I spent several days in the field testing these waders out and hunting in various terrains. They are not only durable but waterproof as well. As far as warranty goes, it is 1 year from the date of purchase.

Gator Waders Shadow Waders

Gator Waders is no stranger in the wader business. They have been around for a long time. With that said, they must be doing something right. I spent 2 seasons with these waders, running them through all kinds of situations and terrain in both the early and late seasons. They have withstood the test of time. Not only are they durable, they are also very comfortable. They are made of 5 mm abrasion-resistant neoprene material with 1000 gram 3M Thinsulate boots. The rubber boots are comfortable and have an aggressive tread on them that will handle all terrain types. As far as waterproofing goes, they do their job at keeping you dry. Like most other waders, they also offer a 1-year warranty from the time of purchase.

Best Mid Range Wader:

Frogg Toggs Men’s Amphib Neoprene

The Frogg Toggs Mens Amphib wader is a steal at just over 200 dollars. These 3.5 mm neoprene chest waders are as comfortable as it gets. They are offered in 2 different colors and multiple different sizes. The high back design of these waders makes them a great fit for wading in deeper waters while remaining dry. These waders have just enough insulation to keep you warm on chilly days and the built-in handwarmer is a plus. As far as the boots go, they are made of 600-gram thinsulite with an aggressive tread that will keep your footing while navigating blind through a creek. I found these waders best for the early fall days when the water is cold, but the air temperature is still bearable. They do the job they were designed for though, keeping you dry.

Most Versatile Wader:

Banded Black Label Elite Waders

The company Banded has been a staple in the waterfowl community for as long as I can remember so it’s no surprise, they make some of the top waders in the business. When it comes to uninsulated waders, the Banded Black Label Elite waders are the cream of the crop. Not only are these waders great for early season waterfowl hunting, especially in the warm environments, but they are also my go-to waders for wading creeks and river fishing. These waders come in a wide range of sizes designed to fit your body, making any movements you need to make happen with ease. The Arc welded technology at the seams guarantees they keep you dry all day. Regarding the boot, theys have great traction and fit true to size. They also have great breathability on those warmer days. I put these waders through multiple different scenarios, and they held up to everything I threw at them.

Best Full Body Wader:

Canvasback Waders

When it comes to full body waders if I’m being honest, I’m not he biggest fan. The main reason for this is I like to be able to layer up my top half as needed for comfort while still being able to operate my shotgun with ease. With that said I was still impressed with the Canvasback Full body Waders. These uninsulated waterproof waders are great for guys that like to layer up and only wear one outer layer the whole hunt. They are made of a 4-layer waterproof fabric and have plenty of pockets for all your belongings. When it comes to pockets, they also have two fleece lined hand warming pockets on the chest which I found very handy. They have 1200-gram insulated boots with a semi-aggressive tread. I found these waders work best when wading in shallow water or for the guys that like a one-piece wader design.
