A lifelong outdoorsman and passionate angler, Stuart Wright has spent more than four decades pursuing fish across New York's lakes, rivers, and streams. A native of Elmira, New York, Stuart developed his love for fishing at an early age, chasing smallmouth bass in the Chemung River before expanding his adventures to the waters of Cayuga Lake, where his family owned a lakeside camp. It was on Cayuga Lake that Stuart's passion for fishing truly took hold. He spent countless hours targeting smallmouth and largemouth bass, northern pike, lake trout, brown trout, rainbow trout, and Atlantic salmon, developing the knowledge and instincts that come only from years on the water. While his fishing adventures have taken him after numerous freshwater and saltwater species, Stuart's greatest passion is pursuing lake-run steelhead, brown trout, and salmon in New York's legendary Salmon River. From September through May, he can be found on the river most weekends, hiking miles of rugged riverbank in search of fish, often in some of the harshest weather conditions Upstate New York has to offer. Equally comfortable with traditional fly fishing and centerpin techniques, Stuart brings decades of hands-on experience to his fishing gear reviews, offering practical insights into the equipment, techniques, and conditions that matter most to serious anglers.

Between September and early May, I fish for Chinook and Coho salmon, steelhead, brown trout, and occasionally smallmouth bass. Conditions can range from 80-degree afternoons to winter mornings in the 20s, with water temperatures hovering around…
