The Donald Duck Controversy: Did Trump Jr. Shoot a Protected Bird in Italy?

In December 2024, Donald Trump Jr. embarked on a hunting expedition in the wetlands near Venice, Italy. A video from this trip, shared on the Field Ethos website, and many others—a platform co-founded by Trump Jr.—depicts him alongside a ruddy shelduck, a species protected under European and Italian law. This footage has ignited a fervent debate, with environmentalists and political figures expressing outrage and calling for legal action. Conversely, supporters argue that Trump Jr. adhered to all necessary regulations, framing the incident as a politically motivated attack.

    The Allegations

Andrea Zanoni, a member of Italy’s Europa Verde (Green Europe) party, has been at the forefront of the criticism. He contends that the video shows Trump Jr. with a ruddy shelduck, emphasizing that hunting this species is a criminal offense in Italy. Zanoni has called for immediate action, urging authorities to investigate the incident and impose appropriate sanctions.

Adding to the controversy, Luana Zanella, another Green party lawmaker, has escalated the matter to Italy’s Environment Minister, Gilberto Pichetto Fratin. She has requested a thorough investigation into the hunting activities depicted in the video, highlighting potential violations of both Italian and EU environmental laws.

    Ruddy Shelduck

    The Defense

In response to these allegations, Andy Surabian, a spokesperson for Trump Jr., asserted that the hunting party had secured all necessary permits and hunted in legally permitted areas. He emphasized Trump Jr.’s commitment to adhering to hunting regulations and expressed willingness to cooperate with any investigation. Surabian also noted that it remains unclear whether the ruddy shelduck was shot by someone in Trump Jr.’s group, another hunting party, or died from other causes.

    Legal and Environmental Implications

The ruddy shelduck is protected under the EU Birds Directive and Italian wildlife protection laws. Killing or possessing this species is prohibited; violations could result in fines or other legal consequences. Massimo Buconi, president of the Italian Hunting Federation, confirmed that hunting the ruddy shelduck is illegal in Italy.

Furthermore, hunting in Italy is strictly regulated, especially for non-residents. Non-resident hunters are typically allowed to hunt only on private reserves and must possess the appropriate permits. The video in question was reportedly filmed in the Valle Pierimpiè area, a conserved marshland near the Venice Lagoon, raising concerns about potential violations of hunting regulations in protected zones.

    Public Reaction

The incident has sparked widespread outrage among environmental groups and the public. Critics have taken to social media to express their dismay, with some describing the act as “miseria total” (total misery) and calling for authorities to take decisive action. The controversy has also drawn attention to Trump Jr.’s history of engaging in contentious hunting activities, including previous incidents where he faced criticism for hunting endangered animals.

It should be noted that much of the “public reaction” is from mainstream sources, which typically don’t favor hunter’s rights, and Europe, which also typically doesn’t favor hunters in general.

    Political Context

This incident occurs against a backdrop of heightened sensitivity to environmental conservation in Europe. The European Union has stringent regulations aimed at protecting biodiversity, and member states are expected to enforce these laws rigorously. The involvement of a high-profile figure like Donald Trump Jr. has amplified the issue, leading to calls for accountability and stricter enforcement of conservation laws.

The allegations against Donald Trump Jr. for allegedly hunting a protected species in Italy have ignited a complex debate encompassing legal, environmental, and political dimensions. As investigations proceed, it is imperative to uphold the principles of due process and ensure that any legal proceedings are conducted impartially. This incident underscores the critical importance of adhering to conservation laws and the need for vigilance in protecting endangered species.

    So Did He Do It?

While the investigation still pends, it seems the likely outcome is that someone in his group or he probably did it unknowingly.  Does he seem like a respectful outdoorsman who wouldn’t do something like this on purpose?  I think so.  Will it get politicized and blown out of proportion? Well, I think that’s the biggest guarantee of all.
